Does the iPad have a calculator?

It does now. For its first 14 years the iPad came without one, and Apple finally added Calculator in iPadOS 18. Here’s where to find it, what it can do, and when a different app is the better choice.

Where to find the calculator on iPad

Apple's Calculator app comes with iPadOS 18 and later. It isn't always on the first Home Screen page, so the quickest way to open it is to search:

  1. Swipe down from the middle of the Home Screen. Search opens.
  2. Type "calculator". Tap the Calculator icon in the results.
  3. Keep it handy (optional). Drag the icon from the App Library onto your Home Screen or into the Dock.

Why is there no calculator on my iPad?

There are two usual reasons. If the app was deleted, search for "Calculator" in the App Store, choose the one by Apple, and download it again. If your iPad is on an older iPadOS, open Settings › General › Software Update. If the iPad can't update to iPadOS 18 or later, Apple's Calculator isn't available for it, and a calculator app from the App Store is the way to go.

What Apple's Calculator does on iPad

The iPad got a calculator later than the iPhone, but it isn't a stretched iPhone app. The iPadOS 18 version brought the same features to both devices, plus a few that make most sense on a big screen:

Basic and scientific

Switch between the two with the calculator button in the corner. Scientific mode has the usual trig, powers and roots.

History

Past calculations sit in a sidebar, so you can look back at what you worked out earlier.

Unit and currency conversion

Length, weight, temperature, currency and more, without leaving the app.

Math Notes

Type or handwrite an equation followed by "=", and the answer appears. With Apple Pencil, it even appears in handwriting like yours.

For most people, that's plenty, and it's free with no ads. What it doesn't have is voice input. To calculate by speaking, you'd use Siri, which is fine for one question but not for a list of numbers. The Siri guide explains where it falls short.

Add a calculator to Control Center

If you open the calculator a lot, put it in Control Center so it's one swipe away from any app:

  1. Open Control Center. Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen.
  2. Start editing. Touch and hold an empty spot, or tap the + in the top-left corner.
  3. Tap Add a Control and search "calculator". Pick Apple's Calculator, or Voice Calculate if you have Simple Voice Calculator. That one opens the app and starts listening straight away.

Free iPad calculator apps without ads

Search the App Store for "calculator" and you'll find hundreds of free apps. Many of them are funded by ads, which is why so many people search for a calculator without them. Before you download one, check its App Store page to see whether it says it contains advertising.

Apple's Calculator has no ads. If you want something it doesn't do, look for an app that's built for that one job: a printing-style tape, RPN, or voice. We make Simple Voice Calculator, which is the voice option. It runs on iPad as well as iPhone and Apple Watch, it's free, and it has no ads. Here's how it compares with Apple's app:

They work well side by side: Apple's Calculator for scientific work and conversions, and a voice calculator for adding up long lists.

Adding up numbers by voice on iPad

The iPad is often propped up next to paperwork, which is where a voice calculator helps most. Tap the microphone and read the numbers off the page:

"86.40 plus 12.99 plus 230 minus 15 plus 44.50…"

Each number appears as its own block, and the total updates as you go. If a number is misheard, tap its block to fix it. When you're done, say stop. The full list of phrases covers percentages, parentheses and decimals, and you can try it in the online voice calculator first.
